The problem with modding ponies

Published August 30, 2012 by kittenmorag

So I’m still working on my other projects, but I’ve got another that I’m moving towards that illustrates a trouble I have quite nicely.
So for reasons which I’ll probably go into later, I’m going to make a pony based on Queen Elizabeth I. More specifically, on the picture of her as a princess, in her red dress, which is one of the iconic pictures of Queen Bess.

It was either this or the Armada portrait, and that thing is bloody ridiculous. I mean, really, the ribbons on that thing have ribbons, and this is super classy and should be reasonably simple to make

Surprisingly (or perhaps not if you know me, dear readers), I have a large selection of fabric, beads, and other notions to make this short if not easy work. My friend and I then go about picking a pony. Given that G1 poses are so static, we decided to go with one from G3, and settled on the Kimono Pose. It looks kind of regal and serene, the sort of thing you’d expect the pony ruler of England to look like. Being that there are only four white ponies (again, for the pallor of English royalty of that period) in the Kimono pose, we go with Breezie, as she’s one of the easier ones to find.

Fast forward to today, and Breezie shows up in the mail. I open her, take one look at her, and then call my friend to ask if I can come over. The ensuing conversation runs thusly-

Morag- “Well, I have some good news, and I have some bad news.”

Friend- “So, start with the good news?”

Morag- “Well, Breezie arrived today.”

Friend- “That’s wonderful! What’s the bad news?”

Morag- “This-”

Friend- “Wow… she’s beautiful! She looks like she just came out of the box!”

Morag- “She looks better, actually. Quite a bit better.”

Friend- “… so that’s the bad news. We can’t cut her up, can we.”

Morag- “Nope, not a bit of it.”

I like to think of myself as being relatively hardened to the thought of cutting up cute little ponies, but this happens a lot more than you might think. Just ask the several friends whose little girls now have new ponies to play with because Morag just can’t bring herself to mod them >.<
